About Us - passionate about wood

Established in 1904 as Barnes Branch & Co by Leonard Barnes, grandfather of Jon and Peter Barnes and great-grandfather of Tom Barnes, the current owners of Vastern Timber and George Branch, Vastern Timber is a family-run business specialising in the production and supply of British and European timbers throughout the joinery, furniture and traditional building industries.
In the early days, Barnes Branch & Co produced reproduction furniture at their two factories in High Wycombe. This was to be followed by the production of wings for Mosquito aircraft during World War II and subsequently the supply of beech planks and components to the furniture trade. Increasing demand for these products led to the acquisition of the Vastern Timber sawmill in Royal Wootton Bassett in 1974 and a second sawmill near Chippenham in 1982.
Today Vastern Timber is one of the largest British hardwood sawmills in the country, supplying a range of British and European timbers including oak, chestnut, ash and Douglas fir. At our two sites in Wiltshire we have four log-converting bandmills, computer-controlled drying kilns and well-equipped machining facilities, enabling us to process both hardwoods and softwoods.
Working closely with architects, builders, joiners, furniture makers and timber framers, we provide a professional yet personal service tailored to the unique needs and wishes of our clients. Our attention to detail, expertise and experience enable us to offer the highest standards no matter how large or small the project.
