Fixings for Timber Cladding

The performance of timber cladding depends as much on the fixings and battens as it does on the timber itself. Correct specification ensures durability, structural integrity and a pleasing appearance over time.
Premature failure of timber cladding is often caused by inappropriate fixings—and once installed, problems are rarely easy to rectify.
We stock a carefully selected range of fixings and accessories designed specifically for external timber cladding. Each product addresses common on-site challenges including movement, corrosion, staining and long-term stability.

Specification Guidance

When specifying fixings for timber cladding, the following principles should be applied:

1. Use stainless steel throughout
Always specify stainless steel fixings. Coated or plated alternatives will corrode, leading to staining and premature failure.

2. Match grade to exposure
Use A2 stainless steel for general external conditions. Upgrade to A4 (marine grade) in coastal, high-exposure or polluted environments.

3. Screws allow more flexibility than nails
Cladding fixed with screws instead of nails can be removed and reinstalled intact.

4. Coordinate with the full build-up
Fixings should be considered alongside battens, membranes and ventilation detailing to ensure the system performs as intended.

5. Define fixing strategy early
Decide between visible and hidden fixing at design stage to avoid compromises on site.

Stainless Steel Ringshank Nails

A simple and effective solution for traditional cladding installations. Select flat head nails for face fixing unstable species such larch and oak. Lost head nails are ideal for installing hidden fix profiles.

Key features:

  • Corrosion-resistant A2 (304) stainless steel prevents rust and blue stain
  • Ringshank profile improves withdrawal resistance
  • Maintains a tight hold as boards cup or move
  • Suitable for all external cladding applications

Head options:

  • Lost head (discreet fixing)
  • Flat head (visible fixing)

Available sizes:

  • 40mm
  • 50mm
  • 60mm
  • 75mm

Stainless Steel Cladding Screws

Screws offer greater flexibility than nails and are often preferred where precision, adjustability or future removal is required.

We offer both A2 (304) and A4 (316) stainless steel to suit UK exposure conditions:

  • A2 stainless steel – suitable for most external cladding (Use Class 3.2)
  • A4 stainless steel – recommended for coastal or high-exposure environments

Falida A2 Stainless Steel Screws

A versatile option for most general cladding applications.

Key features:

  • A2 stainless steel for typical UK conditions
  • Optimised thread reduces insertion force
  • Countersunk head for a clean finish
  • Drill tip reduces splitting
  • Driver bits included
  • Black-coated option available

Available sizes:

  • 4.0 × 40mm
  • 4.0 × 50mm
  • 4.0 × 50mm (black finish)

Simpson A4 Marine Grade Stainless Steel Screws

A4 (316) stainless steel screws for more aggressive environments and demanding applications.

Key features:

  • A4 (marine grade) stainless steel
  • Ribbed countersunk head for a flush finish
  • Type 17 point reduces splitting
  • 6-lobe drive for improved torque transfer
  • Minimises staining on tannin-rich timbers
  • Driver bits included

Available sizes:

  • 4.2 × 55mm

TIGA Hidden Cladding Connector

A concealed fixing system for open-jointed cladding where a clean façade with no visible fixings is required.

Key features:

  • No visible fixings
  • More robust than typical hidden-fix systems
  • Integrated spacing control for consistent joints
  • Sliding and fixed-point design accommodates movement
  • Enables faster, more consistent installation
  • Suitable for horizontal and vertical installations

Gumo D Ventilation Strip

A simple but effective way to improve the durability of the entire cladding structure by managing moisture between the battens and the cladding boards. The Gumo D ventilation strip sits between the cladding boards and the primary batten to prevent persistent wet spots that can lead to premature decay and failure.

Key features:

  • Prevents persistent wet spots
  • Extends the life of cladding and substructure
  • Reduces stress on fixings
  • Narrow 15mm profile minimises contact area
  • Supplied in 10mt rolls for quick installation

Available size:

  • 10m × 6mm × 15mm
