I've purchased various products from Vastern including cladding, character boards, planned timber and huge oak slabs. Everyone is extremely helpful and professional, especially Wolf who's helped me out many times to find exactly the timber I needed. They always have a large range of character boards in stock and the quality of timber is always exceptional.

I've bought Vastern Timber's modified Brimstone Ash for three different parts of a single project on my house (cladding, roof terrace decking and fence/gate structure) and the results have been stunning. Not only is the timber of the highest quality and looks great, but the attention to detail and helpfulness of the Vastern staff - from placing and adjusting the order to carefully poositioining the load onto my vehicles - has been second to none.
If you're a carpenter, you'll love this place. Great selection of oak planks, mouldings, various lengths and sizes. Amazing choices of whole tree rough edged planks, various sizes and types, oak, elm, etc. Lot's more too, cladding, oils, the list goes on. Competitive prices, friendly helpful service 👍

We are based in Kent and we re-clad our house in Brimstone poplar. The product is beautiful and it was one of the best decisions we made in our renovation process. Stefan and the team have been very helpful with information and advice both before and after the sale. Thank you!

I'm an amateur and wanted to clad my daughter's ugly extension. Vastern's prices were excellent but it was their service that was outstanding. They spent time helping us choose what we wanted. When we scrimped too hard and ordered short, they were quick to help us out. And a final request for two soffit boards was met with equal kindness. These people are terrific, I recommend them.
Waney edge larch clad 4x4 shed for £500. Half the price of everyone else. Great customer service on the phone. Fast delivery.
Ordered larch cladding for the exterior of our house, to add a bit of character to a few areas. Vastern very very helpful in the process and my many questions of what will work well. Definately recommend.
These guys are the best company to deal with and excellent products. Stefan is incredibly helpful and knowledgable/ accommodating and I would recommend them profusely. Building a Hempcrete eco lodge in the Forest of Dean using green oak and cladding from Vastern. We always use them for their quality and service.

We have just installed Brimstone poplar cladding on our new extension and are absolutely delighted with it. It's a beautiful finish, full of character and interest. We're already enjoying watching it change gradually as it seasons. We are so pleased we chose Vastern - a local, independent supplier with a strong emphasis on sustainability and locally grown timber and responsibly managed woodland. Right from our first visit, and the brilliant display boards in the car park showing cladding as it matures in all different aspects (ie North facing, South facing etc) and the beautiful showroom, we knew we had found something special. The team have been hugely helpful in outlining options, explaining technical aspects and advising on choices and the customer service has been excellent.
Excellent service, advice and products. They supplied 1700 linear meters of Siberian Larch Grade A rainscreen cladding. Great quality product which looks fantastic now it is installed.

We ordered English Cedar to clad the outside of our bungalow. Initially we weren't sure what we needed, but Stefan was very helpful and knowledgeable and guided us through the whole process. He answered any queries and made it quick and easy to place our order. We were told how long it would take and our ordered was delivered very promptly once it had been milled. The product delivered is of a very high standard and we are extremely pleased. We cannot fault Vastern and would definitely recommend them. Many thanks to Stefan, the delivery driver (who was brilliant) and the whole team.

No wonder Vastern has so many great reviews. From start to finish they were friendly, helpful, knowledgable and so professional.

I’m building a shed from scratch with minimal DIY experience and cladding it with Larch waney edge shiplap. They’ve helped me through every stage and nothing was to much bother for them.

All the staff are a credit to the business but I have to say that Stefan was exceptional with his customer care throughout the purchasing.

I collected my order and of arrival I was greeted by Andy aka Wolf. What a guy, great customer care, incredible with his forklift skills and a very professional well mannered and a fun character.

As I needed to adjust my payment, I went in to the office, fully masked up of course. There I spoke to Dee who kindly refunded me the difference. Again her and her colleague were very polite and professional but with great personality.

Although Vastern Timber is a 2 hour drive for me, the level of service, the quality of the product, the knowledge provided and the very reasonable pricing all make it very worth it...and there’s also the bonus of dealing with an amazing team whilst you’re there.

Top job Vastern, it was an absolute pleasure!!!

I have just taken delivery of some cladding from Vastern, this is the 3rd time I’ve used them and have been really impressed each time. The service, price and quality of timber is all excellent. Wolf the delivery driver was really helpful, friendly and professional. I’d highly recommend them.

Vastern provided excellent pre-sales advice and delivered our timber cladding as promised. Their prices were competitive and all the staff were polite and helpful from sales through to delivery.

From the very start of my waney edge cladding project Dee at Vastern provided invaluable advice and guidance. First class customer service and quality timber I would highly recommend Vastern Timber for any size job you might want to undertake.

Really helpful, willing to offer help and advice. Delivery staff are also great, friendly, notify you of when to expect them and help with unloading on site.

The wood cladding we have used is brilliant, looks really smart and our carpenter was impressed with the quality.

Timber is always of good quality, they always beat their lead times and all their staff are very helpful. Especially delivery driver 'Mr Wolf' who went above and beyond, helping to bring all our cladding around the back of the property, certainly way further than the curb!

The Canadian Red Cedar that Vastern supplied has helped CRD Bath, our builder, to create a spectacular house. We have used it for cladding the first floor and the soffits of all of the overhangs. Vastern planed the timber to uniform profiles throughout and the quality of the workmanship on site has resulted in a superb job. It is pleasing to see the timber already beginning to weather uniformly.

Fantastic service and delivery today. Excellent quality cladding and would recommend very highly.

Excellent service from Vastern Timber, Andy dealt with my initial request & passed it on to Dee who recommended & provided a price quickly for some planed cedar for cladding, within a couple of days Andy was back with delivery of some really nice timber, very pleased.

Just got some Siberian Larch Grade A and B delivered today in 140mm and 95mm for decking and wall cladding. Andy was extremely helpful with the delivery and had great knowledge of the product. Dee was also very helpful when ordering. Her job would be made easier though if there was a more efficient way for the customer to measure up the lengths required. It took me a while to get my head around measurements and I had to rely on Dee to confirm the lengths. Maybe some clever software could help there, which would relieve the pressure off Dee to have to confirm all the measurements. Just a thought. Thank you.
I was recommend to use Vastern Timber for some internal oak cladding I was looking for. I was served by Dee who presented me with exactly the product I wanted. The wood was ready within the lead time quoted and was then delivered by Wolf who's customer service was exception. Thanks all I will be back again...

Brimstone Cladding Features

Thermal modification is a natural, toxin-free process that changes the cell structure of the wood by heating it to over 210°C. This removes moisture, resin, and extractives, resulting in a material that is stable, durable, and resistant to decay. The process also minimises the risk of bending, warping, or distortion.

To produce Brimstone timber cladding, we use fast-growing British hardwoods, helping to regenerate native woodlands. All are available in a range of widths and machined profiles. The range includes three main species:

Performance

Thermal modification significantly improves stability, meaning brimstone wood cladding shows very little shrinkage or expansion in varying conditions. This reduces cupping, splitting, and distortion, ensuring long-term performance.

The process also transforms non-durable British hardwoods into Class 1 durable timbers, with an expected lifespan of at least 30 years when used above ground as cladding.

Brimstone timber cladding has a consistent walnut-brown colour, though this will fade quickly to silver-grey if left untreated. Coatings can slow this process.

The only drawback of Brimstone thermally modified wood is its brittleness. Care is needed during handling and installation, though once installed, this characteristic poses no issue.

Brimstone
Cladding Profiles

Brimstone wood cladding is best suited to machined profiles that create clean lines and sharp shadow gaps. Halflap profiles VHL4 and VHL6 are particularly popular.

Thanks to its stability, Brimstone also works well with tongue and groove profiles, including those suitable for hidden fixings such as VTG5A and VTG6.

Cladding boards are normally 20mm thick and available in widths of 70mm, 95mm, 120mm, and 145mm.

How and when to fix your Brimstone cladding

Brimstone timber cladding can be installed vertically or horizontally, depending on the chosen profile. Vertical installation requires a double batten system, while horizontal boards need only a single set.

Boards may be screwed or nailed, but only stainless steel fixings should be used to avoid staining. Because Brimstone wood cladding is more brittle than natural timbers, care is required when handling and installing:

  • Always pre-drill if hand-nailing.
  • Countersink pilot holes when using screws.
  • Avoid first-fix nail guns, as nails are too large and may split the boards.
  • Second-fix nail guns can be used, inserting two nails at opposing angles.
  • An expansion gap of at least 2mm should always be included.

Being stable, Brimstone wood cladding can be installed at any time of year.

We can supply the correct stainless steel fixings with your order.
