Brimstone® Sycamore Cladding Features

Durable and stable, this timber cladding offers functionality while still being visually appealing. The silky grain and natural ripple commonly found in sycamore trees are enhanced by the thermal modification process, creating a striking finish.
The durability and rich brown colouring of thermally modified sycamore make it a strong alternative to imported cedar and tropical hardwoods for both indoor and outdoor wood cladding. All Brimstone® hardwoods are sourced exclusively from Britain, supporting the local woodland economy. Sycamore is fast-growing, renewable, responsibly harvested, and Grown in Britain certified.
The thermal modification process is entirely chemical-free. By superheating the timber to over 200°C, the structure of the wood is reconfigured to make it stable, durable, and resistant to pests and decay. As a result, Brimstone sycamore cladding is certified to perform outdoors for over 30 years.

Characteristics

Appearance
Consistent brown colouring with a silky grain. May include occasional small, sound knots.

Weathering
With most natural extractives removed during the thermal modification process, the timber weathers evenly and is less prone to staining. The colour will fade to grey more quickly than untreated species. Surface mould may appear on south-facing elevations but can be neutralised with standard treatments or white wine vinegar.

Desired service life
Up to 60 years in occasionally wet weather conditions and 30 years in frequently wet conditions.

Movement class
Small.

Resistance to impact
Medium.

Working properties
Thermally modified timber is more brittle than untreated wood. Care is required when cutting or nailing to avoid chipping. Pre-drilling is recommended.

Density
550 Kg / M3

Extractives
No chemicals are used in the modification process, and most natural extractives are removed, leaving the timber inert.

Installation

How to fix
Fix through the face or tongue (on suitable profiles) using stainless steel nails. Hand nailing, second fix nail guns, or trim head screws are all suitable, provided only stainless steel is used. Always allow for a 2 mm expansion gap between boards.

Batten type
Treated softwood, 35 mm × 50 mm.

Batten spacing
400-600 mm.

Nail type
Stainless steel only. Use 50 mm ring shank nails for hand nailing, 50 mm second fix brad nails for nail guns, or trim head screws.

When to fix
Installation can be carried out year-round.

Resistance to fixing
Medium. Modified wood is more brittle, so pre-drilling and careful handling are advised.
