The Woodshed, a refined contemporary conversion
Tucked away on the outskirts of St. Peter Port, Guernsey, lies The Woodshed, a striking contemporary property offering a sense of seclusion while remaining closely connected to the nearby town.
Originally a barn, The Woodshed has been thoughtfully transformed by award winning DLM Architects into a fluid, flexible living space designed for modern life. While it benefits from an urban setting, the home retains a calm, peaceful atmosphere, balancing convenience with tranquillity.
A carefully considered material palette gives the property its distinctive character. Pale polished plaster, brick and porcelain create a soft, neutral backdrop, chosen not only for their natural aesthetic but also for their durability and low maintenance – an important consideration for busy homeowners.
Our Brimstone Ash Cladding was selected to complement these tones while introducing a bold architectural feature. Used to form a dormer-style extension, it provides additional headroom and accommodates a Part M compliant staircase, combining practicality with visual impact.
Maximising natural light was central to the design approach. Working with the existing footprint and opening additional aspects, DLM Architects introduced new glazing to draw daylight deep into the home throughout the day.
The result is a series of spaces that feel bright and open, yet also offer moments of shade, privacy and retreat.
The timber cladding detail at the windows is integral to the design, enhancing both privacy and the overall architectural expression.
The internal and external spaces have a connected feel as the materials inside and outside are similar. Sections and glimpses of the external timber cladding can be spotted through windows and angles within.
The building’s form, site levels and material choices allow it to sit comfortably within the landscape, appearing almost sunken within its surroundings. This sensitive approach minimises visual impact within its neighbouring residential properties, while strengthening the connection between the property and its setting.
Today, The Woodshed stands as a contemporary, sustainable home. It is an inviting example of how modern design and advanced building techniques can transform an existing structure into a highly efficient and beautifully considered living space.
