What is Square Edge Cladding?

Square edge timber cladding boards are straightforward sawn planks, normally 25 mm or 20mm thick and supplied in a variety of widths. They are only suitable for vertical installation and are often provided in green (fresh sawn) timber with a rough-sawn finish.
This profile is available in a wide range of exterior timber cladding species, although finger-jointed oak and sweet chestnut are not recommended.

Installation

How to fix
Face-fix only, using two nails per board/batten. Hidden fixings should not be attempted.

Batten type
Treated softwood, 50 mm × 50 mm.

Batten spacing
400-600 mm.

Nail type
Stainless steel ring shank nails, 65 mm or 75 mm for 25 mm boards.

When to fix
Timing depends on the species. Installing green (fresh sawn) timber during warm months is not advisable.

Other considerations
Green timber boards will shrink by around 10% during the first two to three years as they dry. If exposed to hot, dry conditions before or soon after fitting, square edge timber cladding is more likely to warp, cup, or split. For best results, install fresh sawn wood cladding in autumn or winter.
