Appearance
Brimstone ash timber displays a consistent chocolate brown colour with a pronounced grain pattern. Decking boards may contain occasional small, sound knots.
Weathering
The thermal modification process removes most natural extractives, resulting in relatively consistent weathering that is largely free of staining. Weathering to a grey colour occurs more quickly than with non-modified timber.
Durability (EN350-2)
Very durable. Class 1
Desired service life
Frequently wet conditions: 30 years. This is heavily reliant on good design and installation. Realistic service life as decking is more likely to be 15 to 20 years.
Movement class
Small
Working properties
Brimstone is more brittle than untreated wood. Care should be taken when cutting and fixing to avoid splitting. Pre-drilling and countersinking are essential.
Density
563 Kg / m3
Extractives
The thermal modification process involves no chemicals and removes most naturally occurring chemicals from the wood. Brimstone ash decking can be treated as inert.
