Oak remains the most popular type of hardwood flooring. Being beautiful and at the same time tough and hard, oak is ideal for almost all flooring areas. Solid oak flooring is 100% solid; no plywood or laminate, just 20mm of pure oak hardwood.
In our opinion, English oak is the most attractive grown anywhere in the world. With pips, burrs, swirling grain and brown streaks, English oak flooring creates the ultimate wow factor. We try our best to source all of our oak logs from England, but sometimes we have to take a trip to France to top up our stocks.
Laying a solid oak floor takes skill and time, but there is no other way of creating the authentic look of a traditional oak plank floor. It doesn’t matter how much you pay for a distressed engineered floor, it will never have the charm of a solid floor. There is something about the imperfections and the way that solid boards move a little as they settle that sets it apart.
If the extra work and time put you off, think of it this way; oak trees take at least two hundred years to grow, and there is no reason why your oak floor will not last for another hundred years. It will only take a few more hours and bit more craft to lay a solid oak floor.

First Grade oak floor
The straightest and least knotty oak trees are used for our First grade oak flooring, which makes the wood ideal for contemporary or formal rooms. The floorboards will be relatively even in colour and free of larger knots and defects. First grade boards should require very little filling or remedial work after installation.
Character Grade oak floor
As the name suggests, our Character grade oak floor is full of interest and variation, creating a traditional rustic look. The floorboards will contain an array of beautiful grain patterns, colours and clusters of knots often referred to as ‘cat’s paws’. This grade of flooring is oak at its most natural.
Barn Grade oak floor
Our Barn grade oak is rugged and wild creating a stunning floor for large open plan rooms. We use our widest and most ‘characterful’ wood for these floors with boards full of swirling grain, large knots and a wide spectrum of colours ranging from pale honey to chocolate brown.
Factory Grade oak floor
The Factory grade oak is a narrow strip, light character floor suitable for small spaces and contemporary interiors where wider boards would look out of place. Factory grade also allows the inclusion of some natural character without appearing too rustic.
Tiger Brown Grade oak floor
Tiger brown oak flooring is a beautiful version of our Character oak with streaks of chocolate brown and shimmering gold. It is the darkest of all our hardwood floors and is particularly suited to rooms with plenty of natural light.

Solid Oak flooring specification
Our range of solid oak flooring is supplied in a traditional mixed width format with each floor comprising of three widths. We do this to make best use of each oak tree we cut and because it is the way it has been done for hundreds of years. The board widths are designed to be laid randomly to create a natural looking floor.

Availability
We have a large range of solid oak flooring in stock but please allow three to four weeks for the wide board specifications. We also stock a range of oak skirting and architraves to match your oak floor.

Profiles
Our solid hardwood floors are supplied machined to a tongue and groove profile (T&G) on the long edges. The ends are cut square but may need retrimming on site. The corners are sharp rather than bevelled. The boards are reversible so that you can choose the best face when laying. We also offer our Barn Grade oak floor machined to a simple square edge (SE) profile.

Installation
| Acclimatisation | Our solid hardwood flooring is dried to a moisture content of approx 10–12%. We recommend that you acclimatise your hardwood floor in the house for four to six weeks before being laid. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
