Feather-edge boards are formed by sawing a rectangular section at an angle, resulting in two sections tapered across the width.
Feather-edge boards are laid horizontally, with a vertical overlap of approximately 25mm for boards up to 150mm, and 40mm for boards wider than 150mm.
For board widths up to 150mm, we recommend a thickness of 4mm to 18mm (2 ex 25mm board). For widths wider than 150mm, we recommend a thickness of 6mm to 23mm (2 ex 32mm board).
Feather-edge boards are supplied green* (wet) with a sawn finish, cut from logs harvested in well-managed native woodlands.
Boards are supplied in random lengths from 2.0 – 4.0 metres. (Elm is supplied in the shorter specification 1.8 – 3.0 metres.)
Boards may vary in each dimension by +/- 3mm.
*It is important to consider the potential dimensional shrinkage and movement of green timber. Depending on the species, boards may shrink by 10% over the first two to three years as the wood dries. If exposed to hot, dry weather, before or soon after fitting, boards are likely to cup, warp and split. The best time to fit cladding is in the autumn or winter.
