Thermal modification is a natural, toxin-free process that changes the cell structure of the wood by heating it to over 210°C. This removes moisture, resin, and extractives, resulting in a material that is stable, durable, and resistant to decay. The process also minimises the risk of bending, warping, or distortion.
To produce Brimstone timber cladding, we use fast-growing British hardwoods, helping to regenerate native woodlands. All are available in a range of widths and machined profiles. The range includes three main species:

Thermal modification significantly improves stability, meaning brimstone wood cladding shows very little shrinkage or expansion in varying conditions. This reduces cupping, splitting, and distortion, ensuring long-term performance.
The process also transforms non-durable British hardwoods into Class 1 durable timbers, with an expected lifespan of at least 30 years when used above ground as cladding.
Brimstone timber cladding has a consistent walnut-brown colour, though this will fade quickly to silver-grey if left untreated. Coatings can slow this process.
The only drawback of Brimstone thermally modified wood is its brittleness. Care is needed during handling and installation, though once installed, this characteristic poses no issue.
Brimstone wood cladding is best suited to machined profiles that create clean lines and sharp shadow gaps. Halflap profiles VHL4 and VHL6 are particularly popular.
Thanks to its stability, Brimstone also works well with tongue and groove profiles, including those suitable for hidden fixings such as VTG5A and VTG6.
Cladding boards are normally 20mm thick and available in widths of 70mm, 95mm, 120mm, and 145mm.
Brimstone timber cladding can be installed vertically or horizontally, depending on the chosen profile. Vertical installation requires a double batten system, while horizontal boards need only a single set.
Boards may be screwed or nailed, but only stainless steel fixings should be used to avoid staining. Because Brimstone wood cladding is more brittle than natural timbers, care is required when handling and installing:
Being stable, Brimstone wood cladding can be installed at any time of year.
We can supply the correct stainless steel fixings with your order.
