November 2025 News from the Sawmill
Welcome to our November newsletter
This month’s newsletter brings together a few things we care about: good timber, good practice, and good stewardship of the land it comes from.
We’re sharing a closer look at re.green, an Earthshot finalist working to restore Brazil’s forests, along with some practical guidance on getting moisture levels right before laying hardwood flooring. You’ll also find a new case study featuring a standout North Somerset eco home built with Brimstone ash – a great example of how locally grown, thermally modified timber can shape modern design.
Have a read, explore what interests you, and if you’re planning a project of your own, we’re always here to help you choose the right wood for the job.
Moisture Matters for Hardwood Flooring
Before laying a timber floor, it’s vital to match the wood’s moisture content to the building’s temperature and humidity. Getting this balance right prevents shrinkage, swelling and distortion. Learn how a simple meter and a little patience can make all the difference.
Re.green: Restoring Balance in Brazil’s Forests
This month’s Earthshot Prize finalist re.green is proving that restoration and responsible business can go hand in hand. Working across Brazil’s damaged rainforests, the team blends modern technology with traditional knowledge to bring native woodlands back to life.
So far, they’ve planted more than six million trees and created hundreds of local jobs. Their ambition is to restore one million hectares of forest and capture 15 million tonnes of CO₂ each year — a reminder that thoughtful management of natural resources can rebuild both ecosystems and livelihoods.
Case Study: Brimstone Ash for Eco Home
Take a look inside a striking North Somerset eco home built with Brimstone ash. This case study shows how locally grown, thermally modified timber can elevate modern design.
Meet us at the Homebuilding & Renovating Show
We’re heading to the Bath & West Showground this month for the Homebuilding & Renovating Show, where our team will be on hand to talk all things timber. If you’re planning a project, it’s the perfect chance to explore British-grown wood, ask questions, and see how the right timber can transform your build.
Find out more about what to expect and how to visit us at the show.
Thanks for reading.
If you have any questions or stories of your own, we’d love to hear from you.
