Solid Ash Flooring in a Cotswold Farmhouse

English Ash Flooring

Some houses don’t need statement pieces.
They need materials that feel like they’ve always belonged there.

In this Cotswold farmhouse renovation, the brief was simple: keep the character, introduce warmth, and choose materials that would age well. Solid ash flooring was selected throughout the main living areas for its light tone, subtle grain and strength underfoot.

The result is calm, natural and honest.

Why Ash?

Ash is one of Britain’s most versatile hardwoods. It’s durable, pale in colour and has a distinctive, flowing grain that adds interest without overpowering a room. In period properties especially, it provides brightness without feeling modern or clinical.

For this project, 20mm solid ash floor boards were chosen. That thickness gives the floor a reassuring solidity and allows for sanding and refinishing over decades of use. It’s not a short-term surface. It’s a structural finish.

Performance in a Working Home

Farmhouses are lived in properly. Muddy boots. Dogs. Firewood. Movement between rooms.

Solid ash hardwood flooring performs well in these conditions. It’s strong, resilient and designed to last. Supplied unfinished, it allowed the client to apply a finish that suited the character of the property and the way the space is used.

The boards were machined with a traditional tongue and groove profile, ensuring a tight fit and long-term stability once installed.

A Natural Fit

What makes this floor work isn’t just the species. It’s proportion.

The board width, thickness and finish were selected to sit comfortably within the scale of the building. Nothing feels forced. The flooring grounds the rooms rather than dominating them.

Ash has a way of catching light softly. In this farmhouse, it brings warmth without heaviness – particularly important in properties with lower ceilings and smaller window openings.

Built to Last

All of our solid ash flooring is manufactured from British-grown hardwood and supplied at 20mm thickness as standard. It’s designed to be refinished over time, adapting as homes evolve.

This project is a good example of how the right hardwood flooring choice doesn’t shout. It settles in. It becomes part of the building.
