Execution
General
- Installation standard: In accordance with TRADA Timber Decking, the Professionals’ Manual 2nd Edition
- Handling: Avoid damage during handling. Store under cover with ventilation
- Oak contains natural tannins which will corrode ferrous fixings and stain porous materials below the deck boards
- Waste and offcuts: Recycle, burn, or compost. Supplied untreated and uncoated for easy end-of-life recovery
Substructure
- Space joists at 400mm centres
- Construct to allow ventilation below deck boards
- Install on level, well-drained ground or solid base with appropriate fixings
- Install frame with a fall of 1:100 to prevent standing water
- Fix Gumo D distance band to top of joists to avoid permanent wet areas between deck boards and joists
- Treated timber: Treat surfaces exposed by cutting or drilling with two coats of a preservative solution recommended by supplier
Deck Boards
- Install deck boards securely and neatly to avoid bowing, splitting, indentations, or other unsightly characteristics
- Maintain minimum of 8mm expansion gap between boards
- Position board ends over a joist
- Fixing method: Pilot drill and countersink for each fixing. Insert two stainless steel decking screws through the face at each joist
- Screw heads to finish flush with or slightly below surface of wood. Avoid protruding or deeply recessed fastener heads
- Ensure all fixings are installed in a consistent and straight line to maintain a uniform appearance
