North American western red cedar (Thuja plicata) (durable softwood)
North American western red cedar is sourced from the west coast of North America and Canada. Cedar wood is prized for its natural durability and beautiful appearance.
North American western red cedar has a strong, distinctive grain and the colours range from dark chocolate brown to light amber with occasional streaks of pink. When left untreated, cedar will bleach to a silver colour. Unlike most other coniferous softwoods, western red cedar does not contain any resin and can therefore take a range of paints, oils and stains. The application of a treatment will help to prolong the life of the cladding.
Western red cedar has, in the past year, become increasingly expensive, but it remains one of the most popular choices for high-class exterior cladding. The combination of its natural durability, stability and beautiful appearance ensures a stunning finish.
This timber is available in a range of grades and is supplied as either kiln- dried or green (wet). Cladding is most commonly produced from green cedar in the grade ‘Nos. 2 &3 clears’. Boards of this grade are generally clear with occasional small, tight knots.
BS EN350-2 North American western red cedar is classed as durable and does not require treatment for external use, as long as the sap is excluded.
Workability: Can be nailed and screwed easily without splitting. No pre-drilling necessary. Takes finishes well.
