Inspecting Ash stocks

Oak logs waiting for conversion
The Industrial Revolution, Nelson’s requirements for massive warships, and the demands of two world wars all took their toll on stocks of English timber. The good news, however, is that we still have a surprising amount of forested land – and it is growing in size. Some of the most beautiful and unique wood in the world is produced from trees that grow on our small island.
All of our British joinery woods are cut from the log on site. They are then naturally air-dried according to the thickness of the boards – one year of drying for every inch it is thick. After this, the boards are mechanically-dried to between ten and twelve per cent moisture content, using modern computer-controlled kilns.
Our stocks are normally stored as ‘waney edge’ boards (with the bark still attached) in lengths from 1.8 metres to 4.2 metres. Widths are random and vary widely, but they are normally between 150mm and 350mm.
The wood from Vastern Timber is sold by volume, in either cubic feet or cubic metres.
Selected specifications and sawn-to-size specifications are available.
Please note:
When calculating how much wood to order, work out the net volume of your cutting list and double it. This is the recommended waste factor.
