These simple sawn square-edge boards are a versatile and cost-effective option for rustic vertical timber cladding or screening. Boards can be overlapped or spaced to create a range of styles commonly known as Yorkshire Boarding and Open Board cladding.

What is Square Edge Cladding?
Square-edge cladding boards are simple sawn planks, normally 25mm thick and available in a range of widths. Square-edge boards are only suitable for vertical installation.
Commonly, square-edge cladding boards are supplied in green (fresh sawn) timber with a rough sawn finish.
All cladding species are available for this profile although we do not recommend finger-jointed oak and sweet chestnut.

How to fix
Face fix only. Do not try to hide the fixings. Two nails per board / batten
Batten type
Treated softwood. 50mm thick x 50mm wide
Batten spacing
400 – 600mm

Stainless steel ring shank nails.
65mm or 75mm for 25mm boards
When to fix
Dependent on species. Installing green (fresh sawn) during warm months is not advisable.
Other considerations
It is important to consider the potential dimensional shrinkage and movement of green timber. Depending on the species, boards may shrink by 10% over the first two to three years as the wood dries. If exposed to hot, dry weather before or soon after fitting, boards are likely to cup, warp and split. The best time to fit green timber cladding is in the autumn or winter.
